Dear Katrina,

Some people tell me that all I do is swim. Yet, I love what I do. Signed: Confused.

Be who you are. Do what you love. You deserve to give yourself that.

This kind of reaction often can happen if that is all people see in you. Know that you are much more than just your swimming, regardless of what others say. Swimming offers you many great life lessons and opportunities. You also get to meet many great people who can become your close friends for life, through this great sport! Yet, you also get to find yourself (what you really love and who you want to be) as you swim, and partake in all of your life experiences.

Check out this video of Olympian breaststroker Staciana Stitts, and Cal mid distance freestyler, Margie Hollister. They share great wisdom on this topic and more:

1. You are much more than a swimmer.

2. Listen to your body. Take care of yourself. Eat well.

3. Do what you love.

4. Learn who you are.

5. Swim in college – great rewards come from it!

6. biggest obstacle and how to overcome it.

Staciana shares about learning a new language while living in Morocco, and her two year old daughter. She also shares overcoming one of her biggest obstacles, losing her hair at age 12. Margie shares the value of learning about who you really are, beyond swimming. They both share advice for people who want to swim in college, and how to stay healthy and fit after the main competitive swimming years have past.

Enjoy!
