Defending Champ Joseph Schooling Misses 200 Fly Final

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimming fans will miss out on the highly anticipated 200 fly showdown between Texas teammates Jack Conger and Joseph Schooling. Defending NCAA champion and record holder Schooling swam through the morning heats in 1:45.47, placing 37th overall.

Schooling, who swam a personal best 1:37.97 to smash the NCAA Record at last season’s NCAAs, came into the meet with a season best time of 1:41.58. We haven’t seen him swim this race all that often this year, and he didn’t swim the final of the event at the Big 12 Championships.

Schooling took it out in 49.18, staying within striking range, but struggled on the back half with a 56.29.

Texas still has a big title contender in Conger, who advanced as the top seed in 1:39.88. In his junior season, he broke the American Record, coming up just short to Schooling. Now a senior, this will be Conger’s final individual swim as a collegiate swimmer, and his last chance to finally win an individual title after several narrow misses.

I think it’s even worse now because he’s definitely expected to win. ?

Ricky Berens didn’t win an individual NCAA title and I don’t recall a word about him being an underachiever (and it would have been ridiculous anyways given all Ricky did in his career).

From these comments one would think Conger is struggling to nail down his first All-America plaque. He’s been to the Olympics!

Berets never won nothing worth diddly in NCAA swimming by hisself. Schooling and Murphy both look chunky compared to a year ago, Dats a fact.

Maybe he went slow so that he can give Jack an individual title for his last race

Some of these comments here are really harsh…
None of us really know what’s actually going on, whether he’s sick, out of shape, or if he just gave up. Oh, and he didn’t do that just to let Conger win, jeez.
The best guess I can put forward is that he just had a bad day. It happens. He lost the race he cared about the most and wasn’t feeling it, pretty straightforward. And yes, people can say that’s not the attitude he should have and all that, but give the guy a break, he’ll learn. I’m sure the relay was in the back of his mind and he would rather let himself down than his team (I’ve been there).

I bet he leads off the 400 free relay tonight because he is gunning for Caleb’s 100 free record. Winning the 200 fly isn’t nearly as interesting to him as putting up the fastest 100 free in history. . . . especially when it’s likely that Caleb will anchor Florida’s relay. I bet he loved to see the shock on Caleb’s face. He has no interest in winning the 200 fly. He’s already won it, owns the record, and Texas certainly doesn’t need his points. And regardless of whether or not he’s sick or what he has put in for training, he has put up best times in the 50 free and 100 fly. And let’s not forget he planned… Read more »

love the fire in this theory, except Caeleb may have just thrown down a 39.9 in the individual, so not sure about the likelihood
