Demerae Christianson has resigned her position as an assistant coach with the Auburn Tigers, leaving her alma mater where she was a 15-time All-American from 2001 to 2004. She will be moving to New York City this summer.
“I’m looking to move to the city for a lifestyle change,” Christianson said. “I loved my time at Auburn and will always support my alma mater.”
Christianson says that while she doesn’t have a specific job signed for, her plan is to stay in coaching.
“Demerae is and will always be a vital part of the Auburn program,” head coach Brett Hawke said. “We will miss her greatly but wish her nothing but happiness and success in her future endeavors. We know she will always be an Auburn Tiger and a wonderful ambassador of Auburn Swimming.”
Christianson spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Auburn and oversaw recruiting for the women’s team. Prior to that, she spent three years coaching at Arizona State, where the women’s team saw three-straight top 25 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
In total, she has four years of coaching experience with the Tigers, as she assisted in the 2004-2005 season after completing her athletic eligibility. That was a year when both teams won SEC Championships and the men took home the NCAA title.
Christianson also has short stints at Louisville and Maryland (prior to the program being cut) on her resume. Most of her college coaching jobs have had an Auburn connection – she worked under Auburn alum Dave Durden at Maryland, and under Auburn alum Dorsey Tierney-Walker at Arizona State.
During Christianson’s second stint on The Plains, the Auburn women finished 13th (2013), 14th (2014), and 18th (2015); while the men took 8th (2013), 6th (2014), and 9th (2015).
Christianson originally is from Gillette, Wyoming, and has a degree in criminology from Auburn.
