2023 ISRAELI CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day three of the 2023 Israeli Championships saw multiple swimmers qualify in the 200m freestyle for this summer’s World Championships.

For the women, it was Daria Golovati who got it done for gold, powering her way to the top of the podium in a time of 1:58.24. That gave Golovati over a half-second advantage over runner-up Anastasia Gorbenko who clocked 1:58.82 while Ayla Spitz bagged bronze in 1:59.03.

Golovati’s outing represented a big-time personal best and her first-ever outing under the 1:59 barrier.

Entering this meet, the 17-year-old’s career-quickest result checked in at the 1:59.65 logged at the final stop of this year’s Mare Nostrum Tour. Her 1:58.24 time here dipped under the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 1:58.66 needed to qualify for Fukuoka.

Joining Golovati in qualifying in the 2free were Denis Loktev and Tomer Frankel in the men’s race.

Loktev got to the wall first in a result of 1:46.17 while Frankel snagged silver in 1:46.90. Both men cleared the Fukuoka time standard of 1:47.06 and both also registered new lifetime bests.

Loktev’s previous PB and Israeli national record stood at the 1:46.64 notched at the 2020 Olympic Games. Frankel’s prior best result rested at the 1:47.16 he put up 5 years ago.

Additionally, Loktev’s new Israeli standard now ranks as the 15th fastest performer in the world this season.
