Denison falls to Eastern Michigan; Tops Wittenberg

Jan 10, 2014

The Big Red squad divided into two groups for their first competition since the midseason meet. One half of the athletes stayed at home for a dual meet with Eastern Michigan University while the other half made the trek to Springfield, OH for a meet with NCAC competitors, Wittenberg. In both the men’s and women’s meets, Division I EMU toppled the Big Red; against the Tigers, Big Red was victorious.

EMU outscored the Big Red women 181-118. However, that didn’t stop Carolyn Kane of Denison from scoring three victories and breaking a pool record. She claimed the 50 freestyle in a record 23.93 and 100 freestyle (52.88) and took first in the 400 freestyle relay with teammates Ashley Yearwood, Tully Bradford and Molly Willingham (3:32.28). That 50 freestyle Yearwood and Willingham went on to post runner up finishes through the night: Yearwood was second in the 100 (53.79) and 50 freestyles (24.24). Willingham took second in the 200 back in 2:08.57.

The only other victories of the night came courtesy of the distance freestyle events. Campbell Costley and Taylor Johns  switched off victories, with Costley laying claim to the 500 (5:02.66) with Johns in second (5:03.17). On the men’s side, DU ended the meet against EMU in second, 184-116.
