Denison’s KT Kustritz Establishes New D3 Meet Record in 200 Breast

2018 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Women’s 200 Yard Breaststroke – Final

  • NCAA Record: 2:12.20 2/20/2016 Sam Senczyszyn, UW Eau Claire
  • Meet Record: 2:12.30 3/19/2016 Emily Hyde, Amherst

Qualifiers:

  1. KT Kustritz, SO Denison 2:12.27
  2. Caroline White, SO Williams 2:13.45
  3. Julia Wilson, SR Kenyon 2:15.75

Denison sophomore KT Kustritz, the first woman to swim a sub-1:00 100 breaststroke in Division III, broke the NCAA Division III Meet Record in the 200 breast on Saturday, winning the final in 2:12.27. Although she was .07 off the overall NCAA Division III Record, set in February 2016 by UW-Eau Claire’s Sam Senczyszyn, she did lower Emily Hyde’s 2016 meet mark of 2:12.30 by .03.

Coming into NCAAs, the fastest Kustritz had been in the 200 breast was the pair of 2:14s she swam at the Miami University Invitational in December 2017. In fact, they were her only sub-2:15.9 performances. On Saturday she clocked a PB of 2:13.29 in prelims, then came back to take another second off in finals with 2:12.27.

Compared to Emily Hyde, Kustritz’s advantage is her going-out speed. Interestingly, though, in her final swim, Kustritz took the first 100 out a tick slower than in prelims, then came home more than a second faster.
