Denver Men Break 2 More School Records on Final Day of ‘Big Al’ Invite

2019 PRINCETON ‘BIG AL’ INVITATIONAL

A 3rd individual win from Penn State’s Maddie Hart and 2 more school records for the Denver men highlighted the last day of competition at the Princeton ‘Big Al’ Invitational on Sunday.

Hart kicked off the session with a win in the 200 back in 1:55.05. Along with a 1:54.90 in prelims, Hart swam the 2 best times of her career on Sunday. That leaves her about a second short of what it took to qualify for last year’s NCAA Championship meet.

Hart previously took a double on Saturday, winning both the 100 fly (52.78) and 100 back (53.21).

She also finished 3rd in the 100 fly, behind her teammate Brooke Matthias (1:58.23).

After winning most of the races on day 2, those were Penn State’s only 2 wins on day 3 of the meet.

The Denver men won 3 races on the day, which included a 2:51.99 in the meet-ending 400 free relay. The team of Cameron Auchinachie (42.60), Sid Farber (41.99), Hugo Sykes (43.48), and Adriel Sanes (43.92) combined for the win in that race. That time is both a new school record for Denver, and an NCAA provisional qualifying time. After swimming an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Time in the 200 free relay, all provisional relays will also get to swim at the NCAA Championships (which means Denver now has 3 qualified relays – including the 200 medley relay).

The Denver men also picked up wins in the 100 free when Auchinachie swam 42.54, and the 200 breaststroke when Sanes swam 1:55.95. Sanes’ time was another Denver school record, cutting .29 off his old record from the 2018 Summit League Championships.

Princeton’s Ellie Marquardt picked up her 3rd individual event win of the meet, topping the women’s mile in 16:16.71. That’s her best time by 47 seconds. She also won the 500 free in 4:40.56 and the 400 IM in 4:14.50.

OTHER DAY 2 MEN’S WINNERS:

  • Dylan Porges of Princeton won the men’s 1650 free in 15:06.51. With Denver’s top miler, Colin Gilbert, at the U.S. Open, the Princeton men went 1-2-3 in that event.
  • Penn State sophomore Michael Daly won the men’s 200 yard backstroke in 1:43.57. That’s about half-a-second slower than he swam at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, but is almost 2 seconds better than he was mid-season last year.
  • Princeton’s Raunak Khosla joined the triple-winner club with a 1:43.91 in the 200 fly. With a big last 50, Khosla had just-enough to overcome Dartmouth’s Connor LaMastra, who took 2nd in 1:44.01. Khosla won the 200 IM (1:45.05) and 400 IM (3:47.69) earlier in the meet.

Men’s Scores After Day 2:

  1. Princeton – 887.5
  2. Brown – 743.5
  3. Denver – 688.5
  4. Penn State – 644
  5. Columbia – 446.5
  6. Johns Hopkins – 225.5
  7. Dartmouth – 239

OTHER DAY 2 WOMEN’S WINNERS:

  • Brown junior Taylor Seaman won the women’s 100 free in 48.84. That ties the school record that was set in 1990 by Jennifer Boyd. That’s almost exactly a second better than she was mid-season last year.
  • Denver’s Charlotte Simon won the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:14.20, just a tenth ahead of Penn State’s Carly Hart.
  • Princeton closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, with the group of Marquardt (49.47), Nikki Venema (48.74), Amelia Liu (49.84), and Christina Bradley (49.62) combining for a 3:17.67.

Women’s Scores After Day 2:

  1. Princeton – 1123.5
  2. Penn State – 1019.5
  3. Denver – 604
  4. Brown – 551
  5. Dartmouth – 312
  6. Johns Hopkins – 223
