With Oakland University now in the Horizon League, it didn’t take much time for the Summit League to begin to erase their memory. It started with the first event, in fact. That’s when the University of Denver women’s 200 medley relay team broke the Summit League record, set by Oakland at last year’s meet, by 2.02 seconds. Johanna Roas (25.47), Amanda Sanders (28.65), Sam Corea (23.02), and Drew Matthews (22.40) turned in a blazing, school-record time of 1:39.54, four seconds in front of IUPUI (1:43.55, school record by 3) and University of Nebraska (1:44.27).
The men’s race was more evenly matched, but Denver’s Kyle Milberg (22.49), Tanner Krall (24.40), Patrick Guillory (21.82) and Kyle Robrock (19.46) still won decisively in 1:28.17. Western Illinois University took second place with 1:30.29, just .40 ahead of IUPUI. WIU broke their school record (which had stood since 1994) by 2.7 seconds and IUPUI broke theirs by 3.5.
The Denver women wiped away all traces of Oakland in the 800 free relay as well, breaking the previous League record by exactly four seconds. Bridgette McNally led off with 1:48.04, and Pioneer teammates Kacie Vanbuskirk, Clara Jenck, and Morgan Mullenix continued the momentum. They touched in 7:20.02, smashing Oakland’s 7:24.02 that dated from 2009. South Dakota State dropped 28.9 seconds from their seed time and ended up beating IUPUI out of second-place by a mere .40. South Dakota State’s 7:28.46 smashed their school record by 6 seconds, while IUPUI bested their school record by 4.5 seconds.
University of Denver’s men’s relay cruised to victory with a comfortable 11-second margin over their nearest competitor. Andrew Torres (1:38.67), Dylan Bunch (1:39.05), Luke Williams (1:38.02), and Scott Bergstrom (1:38.09) won the race in 6:34.13; IUPUI finished second in a school-record time of 6:45.67, and South Dakota State was third in 6:46.60, just sneaking under their school record, too.
