Denver’s Sam Corea Throws Down Second Fastest Fly Split On Day One

2015 WOMEN’S NCAA DI CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Denver Pioneers qualified a relay for NCAAs for the first time in school history this season, and put up a very solid showing at NCAAs with a 23rd place finish in prelims.

Not only was it a celebration of a first for Denver, but Denver’s flyer threw down the second fastest split out of all the swimmers during prelims. Sam Corea rocked a 50.51 100 fly split to help her team put up a 3:34.74.

She was one of only three girls who dipped under the 51-second mark this morning. In finals, only Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell swam a faster split than Corea’s morning time.

Corea’s relay split was incredible, and the time itself helped break a school record by over two seconds, smashing the previous mark of 3:37.16 set back in 2014 by three of the same girls who swam today including Corea.

Denver will also swim the 200 medley relay this week where they’re currently seeded 20th going into the race.

Individually, Corea is currently ranked seventh in the NCAA with a time of 51.70 that she put up in late February. That time falls just shy of her school record of 51.62 that she set in 2014.

Corea will have a chance to better that mark as the split suggests is possible on day two in the 100 fly prelims. Her final swim of the meet will come on day three in the 200 backstroke where she is currently seeded 13th.

Great job for Corea and the Denver relay, she’s on track to final in the individual 100!
