Derek Toomey Joins the Madison Aquatic Club

Derek Toomey joins the Madison Aquatic Club’s Coaching Staff. Toomey will be teaming up with owners Shane Ryan (Beata Nelson’s Coach) and Carly (Piper) Ryan (2004 Olympic Gold Medalist) to help run MAC’s Performace Program.

Derek is a Madison area native who attended Verona Area High School and then swam at the University of Minnesota. While at Minnesota Derek was the first Big Ten swimmer to break 19 seconds in the 50 Freestyle. In 2013 he fished 3rd at NCAA’s in the 50 Freestyle and in 2014 was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Toomey was a professional swimmer representing the Badger Swim Club (NY), where he just finished up his professional career by competing at the 2016 US Olympic Team Trials and the 2016 US Open. Derek coached for the USC Swim Club, Southern California Aquatics and volunteered at the Trojan Swim Club while training with Dave Salo at Trojan Swim Club.

“We are very excited to have Derek join our coaching staff. He brings a lot of enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to our team. Having him here really enhances the program and we are anxious to get to work” said Shane Ryan, Owner/ Program Director.
