After lowering it down to 1:56.73 in the semis, Jeremy Desplanches broke his Swiss National Record for the eighth time in the final of the men’s 200 IM, winning the silver medal in a time of 1:56.56.
The 24-year-old became just the second Swiss male to win a medal at the Long Course World Championships, joining Dano Halsall who won silver in the 50 free back in 1986.
SPLIT COMPARISON
Desplanches blasted out of the gates in the final, leading the field at the 50 wall in 24.85. Compared to his semi-final swim, he was faster everywhere except freestyle.

After the butterfly leg he maintained second place the rest of the way, as Daiya Seto of Japan went on to win in a time of 1:56.14. Defending champion Chase Kalisz took bronze in 1:56.78, ending the American streak of eight straight titles in the event.
Desplanches became the fastest man in Switzerland’s history back in 2015, stealing the record from David Karasek. Check out his record progression below:
