The 2017 French Elite Long Course Nationals continued this morning in Strasbourg with day 4 prelims. Swimmers gathered to compete in the men’s 50 breast, 200 IM, and 100 free, while the women competed in the 100 fly, 200 back, and 800 free. The fastest 8 seeds in the women’s 800 free haven’t swum yet, as they’ll be racing during the finals session. Read on for highlights from today’s morning session.
The men’s 100 free final will be loaded with international sprint stars. Clément Mignon topped prelims with his 49.03, touching a nail ahead of Algeria’s Oussama Sahnoune (49.08). Mehdy Metella and Jérémy Stravius will go head-to-head once again after their close 50 fly battle, as Metella qualified 3rd in 49.22, followed by Stravius in 49.32.
Swiss IMer Jeremy Desplanches was in a league of his own through this morning’s 200 IM prelims. After dominating the 400 IM earlier in the meet, Desplanches will have a chance to sweep the IM titles tonight. After putting up a 2:00.11 in the heats, he’ll be chasing his own Swiss National Record of 1:58.31 in tonight’s final.
Additional Top Seeds:
- Men’s 50 breast- Théo Bussière, 28.37
- Women’s 100 fly- Marie Wattel, 58.66
- Women’s 200 back- Camille Gheorghiu, 2:14.18
I’m going to be controversial:
British men’s 4x100fr would beat France right now: Discuss…
Hhmm, GBR top seed 0.3 in advance of FRA top seed but GBR 2nd/3rd/4th seed basically only on par with FRA 4th seed. Not saying it might not end up closer than it appears on paper but I’d still lean towards FRA.
Meanwhile, over in the USA, whilst they may not yet be breaking open the bubbly; it would not be surprising if certain US sprinters may crack open a cold one as their prospective rivals seemingly tumble out of contention. At this point, the minor medals may as well be decided by a raffle
Cw right now Brazil sum up to 3:13:9 Australia around 3:14:5 Italy and Russia 3:14:9 jpn 3:15:3 GNR and France 3:15:7
Breaking news
Another disaster. The men’s 4X100 free relays not qualified for worlds. After the 4X200 free…. Very hard for the medley relays. Maybe the only chance willl come from our girls in the 4X100 with Bonnet and Gastaldello.
For the non-qualification I just repeat what they said on TV. They add the times and it looks like it’s not enough.
Se my comment above :(, which I was typing and computing while you snuck in. Also big pressure on the 100 fly for the men’s medley relay. I’m not sure on the situation for the women’s medley relay, but the breaststroke was pretty slow IIRC, so work to do in backstroke and freestyle. The 4×200 women didn’t qualify, the fourth swimmer had a 2:01…
Maybe the good surprise will come from the women’s 4X100 medley relay and especially from the women’s 4X100 free relay. Bonnet and Gastaldello look very good and can swim 53 mid/53 high. Hopefully the other girls will step up too.
If we add the top 4 times the result is 3.15.76. The required time is 3.15.19.
No qualification for that relay.
Men’s 100 free. 1. Mehdy Metella in 48.15. Good time not fully tapered
QUALIFICATION FOR WORLDS
2. Jérémy Stravius in 48.68. Not bad after his wrist fracture but not enough to qualify.
3. Clément Mignon in 49.09. Bad season for him.
4. Nosy Pélagie in 49.76
I’m not sure there will be a French men’s 4X100 free relay at worlds.
3.16.42… No qualification. Required time: 3:15.19.
3:15.76 sorry… Required time: 3:15.19.
Mehtella was 48,23.
Women’s 200 back. 1. Camille Gheorghiu in 2.12.74
NR by Laure Manaudou in 2.06.64 in 2006…. And she hated the 200 back.
No qualification
I miss Laure and her always exciting races.
When did Laure swim that 2:06.64?
Nobody ever got near Egerszegi’s 2:06.61 until the arrival of rubbersuit in 2008.
France national record by Laure is 2:07.99 swum in rubbersuit in 2008.
Bobo, you did not know this? 😀
Bobo is inaccurate with his information pretty often, but what was Laure Manaudou’s time in 2008 at Olympic Trials in Dunkerque 20/4/2008 ? 2:06.64 looks like mistake because a month earlier at Euro Champs it is 2:07.99 and later same year at Olympic Games it was just 2:09.39. She was under 2:09 only three times and 2:06 looks very suspicious.
She has been 2:06.64 on 26/04/2008.
Men’s 200 IM. 1. Jérémy Desplanches in 1.57.40. New Swiss national record! The boyfriend of Charlotte Bonnet is on fire.
Best French guy? 2. Théo Berry in 2.02.44 😥
No qualification
Big disappointment for Marie Wattel second in 59.31. Under pressure after the fast start of Gastaldello.
Women’s 100 fly. 1. Béryl Gastaldello in 58.03
Little surprise. She went out very fast and held on. And despite a bad touch at the end she drops 0.45 s off her best time.
Good surprise.
QUALIFICATION FOR WORLDS! 🙂
A real surprise for me, and a rare pleasant one this week :). I was expecting Wattel to be the one here, but she had a shocker seemingly, miles down even on her heat time. Great effort from Gastaldello, well done her!
Surprising result in the men’s 100 free with only one qualifier :(. Will they send a relay? Is it even qualified? I don’t think so actually, the top four times combine to 3:15:76 and the QT is 3:15:19. That’s a huge disappointment!!
It also puts pressure on the 100 fly for the medley relay qualification. Currently you have 54:8 + 1:00:6 + ? + 48:2 which is 2:53:6. The QT is 3:35:2, so they need a 51:6… Read more »
Men’s 50 breast. 1. Théo Bussière in 27.92
No qualification
