Destin Lasco Erases Caeleb Dressel’s 200 IM American Record In 1:38.10

Destin Lasco‘s run of consistency in the 200 IM continued on Thursday night at the Men’s NCAA Championships, as the Cal junior clocked 1:38 for the fourth straight time at the meet, this time getting his hands on the American Record.

Lasco got out to the fastest start of his career, turning in 21.53 after 50 yards of fly, and split the rest of his 50s similarly to where he was this morning, slightly quicker on breast and a touch slower on back and free.

Ultimately, he touched in a time of 1:38.10, chopping three one-hundredths off of Caeleb Dressel‘s American Record of 1:38.13 set at the 2018 SEC Championships.

Compared to Dressel, the difference-maker for Lasco ended up being the freestyle leg, as he was nearly four-tenths off of American Record pace at the 150, but gained 41 one-hundredths coming home.

Despite swimming a time that was just over four-tenths shy of the U.S. Open Record coming into the night, Lasco was a distant second in tonight’s final, as Arizona State sophomore Leon Marchand obliterated the all-time mark in a time of 1:36.34.

Nonetheless, Lasco now owns four of the 10-fastest swims in history—all coming in either the prelims or finals of last two NCAA Championships. Last year, he placed second to Marchand in a time of 1:38.21.
