Update: Marciano also swam a 24.56 on Sunday, so the two will be tied for this record.
Destin Lasco and Vinny Marciano have been battling, virtually at least, at two separate Junior Olympic meets at two separate locations in New Jersey this weekend, but at the end of the day, Lasco will walk away with all three 11-12 yards National Age Group Records.
He put the finishing touch on his meet with a 24.56 in the 50 yard backstroke. That broke the 24.61 done by Marciano on Saturday night (which in turn broke the 25.02 done by Lasco in January).
Lasco now holds this 50 yard backstroke record, the 100 yard backstroke record in 52.32, and the 200 yard backstroke record in 1:53.42.
According to our research, nobody has ever held all three records simultaneously dating back to at least 2001, when USA Swimming started tracking the top 100 in the 200 yard backstroke. Two swimmers prior to that time (David Chan 1992/1993 and Chas Morton 1984) held both the 50 and 100 back records.
Earlier in the night, Lasco swam a 1:57.89 in the 200 IM.

Given how good that 200 IM record is by Chas, the 157 is really impressive. (Perhaps not as impressive as the three NAGs in the backs but really impressive nonetheless.)

By the way, I’ve always wondered why there weren’t age group national championships in USA. I don’t know. It would be cool to see the best 10 and under, the best 11/12 and the best 13/14-year-old American kids swim against each other at least one time a year.
