Gabriele Detti went 3:43.36 for a new national record and a new world-leading time in the 400 free to start Italy’s national championship meet. Detti won the event by seven seconds and took down the old Italian record of 3:43.40 set back in 2000 by Massimiliano Rosolino. Detti went out hard in the swim, building a big lead early and closing in 56.55 over the final 100 to cap the win. Here’s a look at the world ranks in the event with Detti’s time rising to the top of the list:
2016-2017 LCM MEN 400 Free

Race video has also surfaced of Detti’s swim:
The other big swim of the day was a new junior world record from Nicolo Martinenghi in prelims of the 50 breast. Martinenghi was 26.97 in prelims, but wound up going 27.09 to win the final over Fabio Scozzoli (27.33).
Tania Quaglieri went 1:00.96 to win the women’s 100 back. That sets a new age record – the 2000-born Quaglieri previously held the record (listed as “RIC” with her 1:01.24 last summer. Quaglieri is now only about seven tenths off the overall Italian record in the event.
Other event winners:
- Simone Sabbioni was 54.14 to win the men’s 100 back by a tenth over Matteo Milli (54.24).
- The women’s 400 free went to Alice Mizzau in 4:07.92.
- Stefania Pirozzi was 2:08.64 to win the women’s 200 fly. That’s just outside the top 5 times in the world this season.
- Luca Dotto took the men’s 100 free in 48.66, also finishing just outside the top 5 in the world ranks.
Italy has had some good freestylers over the years. Any reason why? Does BoboGigi know?
Detti looked smooth and easy the whole way.
Here in Italy we have good tradition in the free and breast with a lot of good coach in these two styles. If you want a reason, maybe is due the great swimmer we had in the past (lamberti was record holder in the 200m free, fioravanti won two gold in sidney in breast).
What Detti did was awesome, but if you want to take a peek into the future of Italian swimming look no further than Thomas Ceccon. Born in 2001, he is a monster in 3 strokes out of 4 (free, fly, back) and is destroying all age group records. He was already a 50” in the 100 free last year, at 15. Barring burnouts, he is going to be a staple of the national team by 2019.
why is Andrea Bolognesi not there? 2x all american!!
Mixed first day – Detti & Martinenghi very impressive. The rest a bit flat – I expected more from Sabbioni.
Sabbioni has had severe health troubles. Only in the last one month and a half he has been capable to put in a good training.
Like I already wrote, a very good 100 free, above all in perspective (Vendrame, Miressi, Izzo, Bori, Zazzeri and in the next years Ceccon and Burdisso).
On the women’s side not great results, but it was expected. Some good signs from the “millenials” (Quaglieri already at the top of the 100 back and other promising young swimmers, like Cocconcelli, at good results also in LCM after very good Youth Champs in SCM)
Great swim, and a record by a swimmer who was then under a cloud has been wiped out by a great young swimmer!
wow – early and fast
That is some very good camera work, made me feel like I was at the meet in person. A viewer could really get a feel for just how he was going.
