Diego Lopez Diaz Breaks S3 50 Fly World Record

Mexico’s Diego Lopez Diaz took down the S3 50 fly world record on the final day of action at the 2019 World Para Swimming World Series stop in Indianapolis Saturday. Lopez Diaz, 24, went 54.02 in prelims, breaking the previous S3 record of 55.78. Nineteen-year-old Marcos Rodriguez was also under the previous record, going 54.75. Lopez Diaz also won the SM3 150 IM in finals (2:55.20).

Lawrence Sapp picked up his third American record of the meet in the men’s S14 200 IM, going 2:21.05 in prelims. In the SM6 class, the Gutierrez Bermudez brothers – Juan and Raul – went 1-2, with the former going 2:49.36 and the latter 2:57.34. In third was Zachary Shattuck, setting his second American record of the meet in 2:57.73. Carson Sanocki, swimming in the S13 class, also went 2:20.30 for a new American record. Sapp also won the 100 fly, going 59.58.

S5 swimmer Lichao Wang was a multi-event winner Saturday, winning the men’s 50 back in 34.60 and 50 fly in 32.94. Swimmers from the US went 1-2 in the women’s S7 50 fly, with Mallory Weggemann going 35.77 and McKenzie Coan 38.96.

American Robert Griswold won the S8 100 back by nearly 15 seconds, going 1:03.77. Simone Barlaam, fresh off of setting a world record in the 50 free yesterday, won the S9 race in 1:04.4.

Out of the S10 class, Mikaela Jenkins posted the fastest 100 fly time in the women’s field, going 1:07.83. S13 Gia Pergolini was second-fastest in 1:10.95.
