After being dismissed from his position as men’s head swim coach at Tennessee on Tuesday, John Trembley is now under investigation by the Knoxville Police Department, according to the Tennessee fansite GoVolsXtra.
The case was referred to Knoxville police by the University of Tennessee Police Department, though no further comment has been given by either department or the university.
Sources with intimate knowledge of the program were unsurprised by the news. They indicated that Trembley has struggled with the death of longtime assistant Joe Hendee last year, as well as his own personal health issues; one person even said that most were simply waiting out the clock until Trembley stepped aside.
The worst fear in the minds of many we’ve talked to about this, given the current climate of college sports (and sports in general) is that there is a sexual abuse situation similar to the one we saw at Penn State earlier this year. These same sources, however, have indicated that, to their knowledge, the situation that led to Trembley’s dismissal is not related to any sort of sexual abuse.
What are Jt’s “well known” health issues?
Very sad to hear this. JT Trembley is a good guy & loves the Unv. of Tenn.
When you were around him, you were laughing. I know he has a strong belief
in God and I’m sure he is going to need that faith to help with this situation. What
ever that may be?
Kind of sad story. I imagine he has also done alot of good there too, so anytime someone falls like this it is sad.
I had the opportunity to meet Coach Trembley this past fall. He was a great guy to talk to and took time to talk with a young coach. He did get emotional when talking about losing his former coach and losing his former assistant coach. He is a great storyteller and was a lot of fun talk to. I am hoping for the best for Coach Trembley.
