Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
6-time MHSAA state champion Carter Dickey has announced his commitment to Loyola University (MD) for the fall of 2022. Dickey is currently a senior and is primarily a distance freestyle specialist.
“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Loyola University Maryland. I want to thank God, my family, coaches, and teammates for helping me get where I am today. I also want to thank Coach Brian and Coach Jay for this opportunity. GO HOUNDS!”
During his high school season, Dickey swims for Madison Central High School. He’s a two-time Mississippi High School Class 2A (MHSAA) individual state champion, winning the 500 free in both 2020 (4:40.52) and 2021 (4:43.55). In addition, he split pivotal legs on Madison Central’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, which earned state titles in 2020 and 2021. The most notable split was Dickey’s blistering 26.9 breaststroke split on the medley relay in 2021, which was significantly faster than his prelim split (28.2).
In total, Dickey has earned 6 state titles between his sophomore and junior seasons. However, the biggest accomplishment might’ve been Dickey helping lead Madison Central to their first team state title in over 20 years last fall, and helping MC clinch their 2nd consecutive state title in October.
Dickey’s most known for his distance freestyle events, however his sprint freestyle events are also seeing improvements. He led off MC’s 400 free relay in 48.43 which marked a new personal best. Prior to this season, Dickey hadn’t broken 52 seconds.
Dickey also swims year-round with the Mississippi Makos Swim Team (MMST). In March, Dickey raced at the Tupelo Top TYR Invitational 20 and set new personal bests in the 1650 free (16:06.70) and 400 IM (4:13.12). Dickey showed an incredible amount of endurance in his 1650, holding :29’s for nearly the entire race. He even hit a personal best in the 1000 free (9:41.63) going out in the 1650.
His best times (SCY) include:
- 500 free – 4:40.52
- 1000 free -9:41.63
- 1650 free – 16:06.70
- 100 breast – 1:01.04
- 200 IM – 1:57.17
- 400 IM – 4:13.12
Loyola had a shortened 2020-2021 season, with the Hounds seeing a return to competition in mid-February and ending with the Patriot League Challenge in April. The last time the ECAC had a Conference Championships was in February of 2020, where the Loyola men placed 9th with 180 points.
Loyola is an extremely young team, with 16 freshman listed on the team’s roster. Dickey will have overlap with a large majority of the team, including some of their best freestylers. These include sophomore Zach Reid, who was 4:39.55 in the 500 free at the Patriot League Challenge. Dickey will make an immediate impact, as his personal best of 16:06 in the 1650 bested Dylan Champagne (16:10) and Tommy Noone’s (16:22) performances from the Patriot League Challenge in April.
Dickey further explained that he chose Loyola because of the “great education, outstanding team and coaches, and the unparalleled environment I found at the school.”
Dickey joins Floyd Conlin, Teddy Cross, Owen Glaser, Tyler Knurek, Connor Libassi, Michael Venit, Peter Weinstein as members of the incoming class of 2026.
