Distance Freestyler Jonah Saya from Colorado Commits to Cal Poly

For more commitment articles, be sure to check out SwimSwam’s College Recruiting channel.

Jonah Saya of Mission Aurora Colorado Swimming has made a verbal commitment to join the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.

“I verbally committed to Cal Poly because the team made me feel like part of the family right when I walked on campus and I just knew it was the place for me!”

Saya is a senior at Denver’s Cherry Creek High School, with Winter Juniors cuts in the 200-400-800-1500m freestyles. His best times include:

  SCY LCM
200 free 1:41.82 1:55.86
500/400 free 4:36.25 4:04.26
1000/800 free 9:27.91 8:32.54
1650/1500 free 16:00.71 16:10.97
200 back 1:51.75 2:11.37
400 IM 4:13.98 4:43.06

Saya will be able to help the Mustangs at the conference level right away. His 200 free, 1650, and 200 back times would all have landed him comfortably in the respective “B” finals at the 2015 MPSF Conference Championships, and his 500 free and 400 IM are not far off the mark. Saya should be able to work his way onto the 800 free relay as well, making him an excellent point-earner for the Mustangs from his freshman year forward.

Congratulations Jonah!!!! I have watched you come up through the ranks of age group swimming. You have been a humble strong leader to whatever team you swam for….MACS, Colorado All Stars and the Colorado Zone Team. I was in Grand Junction when you were 14 and watched you win every race you entered. Your performance in the Open Water Swim was very impressive as well. Even more impressive was your kindness to your fellow competitors.

Cal Poly should be ecstatic to have such a humble warrior leader join their ranks. They are big winners this week having you as part of their roster.

All the best

Robert.
