Distance Freestyler Marcell Milo-Sidlo Commits to University of Chicago

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Hungarian swimmer Marcell Milo-Sidlo has committed to swim at NCAA Division III University of Chicago beginning in the fall of 2022.

The 18-year old Milo-Sidlo trains with the Budapesti Vasutas Sport Club in the Hungarian capital. That is the same club that is the training home of many of the country’s top male international swimmers, including the recently-retired Laszlo Cseh, as well as Peter Bernek, Richard Bohus, and Nandor Nemeth.

He is primarily a distance freestyler and placed 16th in the 400 free and 14th in the 800 free at March’s Hungarian Olympic Trials.

Best Times in Long Course Meters, Short Course Meters, and 25 Yards (Converted)

LCM SCM
SCY (Conversion)
200 free 1:56.76 1:53.03 1:41.82
400 free 4:02.62 3:57.82 4:31.79 (500y)
800 free 8:25.13 8:06.91 9:16.46 (1000y)
1500 free 16:06.95 15:41.89

200 fly 2:07.49 2:04.06 1:51.76
200 IM 2:11.77 2:07.26 1:54.64
400 IM 4:34.14 4:25.71 3:59.37

His converted best times would already make him competitive with the Maroons’ current best swimmers. In fact, his short course meters 400 free, when converted to a 500 yard time by the SwimSwam time converter, is exactly the same as Chicago’s best swimmer this season: freshman Isaac Kim.

For the Chicago men, who rank #5 in the latest CSCAA Division III rankings, distance freestyles have not been a recent strength. At the most recent UAA Championships in 2020, for example, where the team placed 2nd overall, their highest finisher in the 500 free was 21st from then-senior Taye Baldinazzo in 4:38. They didn’t enter a swimmer at that meet in the 1000 free.

If they want to close the gap on the 22-time defending UAA Champions Emory, they’ll need to do better in those races, and by spring of 2023, both Kim and Milo-Sidlo should have times to place in the A-final (even in a conference with one of the best distance groups in D3 swimming at NYU).

Kim is already the 2nd-fastest 500 freestyler and 1650 freestyler in school history only midway through his first season with the program.

An international recruit is a rare one for Chicago. They only have two on their current roster: Jared Zhang from China, though he went to high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and Arthur Kiselnikov from Australia.
