Double gong for Poort in Geelong

After taking the Australian title in the men’s open 10km event in Perth, world championship representative Jarrod Poort took top spot again today at the Australian Open Water Championships, finishing first in the men’s open 5km at eastern Beach in Geelong, to take the 5 and 10km open water double for 2014.

The Wollongong based swimmer who trains under Ron McKeon hit the gate in 59:14.39, successfully defending his crown from 2013 and proving he is in good form ahead of the Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast in August this year.

Queensland training partners Sam Sheppard (59:19.25) and George O’Brien (59:21.30) rounded out the top three, taking silver and bronze in the open category respectively.

In the men’s Multi Class event, Brenden Hall demonstrated his dominance, defending his title to finish in first place with a time of 1:01:48.10 ahead of Guy Harrison-Murray (1:06:22.04) and Joshua Alford (1:11:07.60).

In the corresponding women’s event, Yeronga Park swimmer Rakiya Thomas won gold in 1:20:40.56.

The women’s open 5km saw Sacha Downing add to her medal haul returning to the top of the podium in a time of 1:05:27.42.

The silver medal went to Zoe Elkerton in 1:05:41.50 with Alessandria Colombini bagging the bronze in 1:05:52.44.
