Dressel Closes in on Phelps’ World Record with 49.86 100 Fly

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The USA’s Caeleb Dressel pulled off a monster double tonight, first putting up the fastest textile performance ever with a 21.15 in the final of the 50 free. He return to the pool shortly after with another historic performance in the men’s 100 fly final when he came within 4 hundredths of Michael Phelps‘ World Record with a 49.86 to win the gold.

On day 6, Dressel put up 2 of the fastest 100 butterfly swims in history with a 50.08 in prelims and 50.07 in semifinals. That marked the 2 fastest textile swims in history, blowing by the textile best 50.39 done by former Bolles teammate Joseph Schooling when he won gold at the Rio Olympics. He’s now the first man in textile to break the 50-second barrier with his 49.86 tonight.

Dressel will also compete in tonight’s final of the 4×100 mixed freestyle relay, giving him a chance to win 3 golds in 1 night.

Triggered. A large amount of you beat up on Schooling and other swimmers on a regular basis. Remember this feeling and don’t do it again.

In case anyone is wondering, Schooling says he’s f*****g pissed, got his f*****g ass handed to him and thats what he gets for taking 6months off. Says nothing went right for him in the final. Was pretty surprised to find that he dared to say that to the media. He must really be pissed. Apparently he “turned the air blue in the mixed media zone” according to a Singaporean News Outlet. Although the article seems to have been edited and the part where he cursed was taken out. Joe did say that “it is what it is” and he’s looking forward to their rivalry in the next years. Honestly anyone else in the field would probably have been satisfied with… Read more »

Too bad he was a bit long on the finish. I wanted that record to fall. Rowdy was screaming as if it were a certainty based on the red line but like so often it comes down to whether you hit the wall perfectly or not. Worrell missed out on a bronze tonight via the same variable. Sjostrom noticed she was going to be long also in the 50 so she compensated with two quick strokes instead of one long and a glide. Her final stroke was very short but I think it was the correct choice.

Obviously that worked for and against Phelps in various Olympic finals. I always wonder if they practice wall technique and strategy often enough,… Read more »
