RECAP

Women’s Highlights:

  • Alabama won the 200 medley relay, and got swift splits from breaststroker Bridget Blood (27.33) and freestyler Bailey Scott (21.86).
  • Alabama’s Mia Nonnenberg won the 400 IM in 4:08.30, less than 3 seconds off the A-cut.
  • Auburn dominated the 100 fly with the only two swimmers under 53 seconds. Haley Black won in 52.33, and Alyssa Tetzloff was just a tick slower in 52.44.
  • Florida’s Amelia Maughan won the 200 free in 1:45.68, and Alabama’s Blood won the 100 breast in 1:00.82.
  • The women’s 100 back showcased young talent, where the top 5 finishers were all underclassmen. Florida’s Emma Ball won in 52.53.

Auburn has opened up a big lead with 760 points, and Florida is second with 610.

Men’s Highlights:

  • The Alabama men took another relay, winning the 200 medley relay. Dressel again had probably the most impressive individual split (23.51 in the 50 breast), but for Alabama, the sum was more than the parts. Conor Oslin swam back (21.20), Pavel Romanov swam breast (24.05), Luke Kaliszak swam fly (20.08) and freshman Zane Waddell swam free (19.19).
  • Florida went 1-2 in the 400 IM. Jan Switkowski won (3:44.45), and Mark Szaranek touched second (3:44.68).
  • Caleb Dressel equaled Mizzou’s Andrew Sansoucie for the top time in the nation in the 100 fly (44.86).
  • Florida freshman phenom Maxime Rooney hit the water for the first time on Day Two, and he won the 200 free in 1:34.82.
  • South Carolina’s Nils Wich-Glasen had a big in-season drop to win the 100 breast in 52.75.
  • Alabama swept the podium in the 100 back—Kalisak (45.29, A-cut time), Oslin (46.59) and Christopher Reid (47.10).
  • Florida won the 800 free relay, but opted to have Dressel leadoff its B relay that swam as exhibition. Despite the disadvantage of the flat start, Dressel still had the fastest split in the field with a 1:34.60.

Alabama leads after Day Two (850), but Florida is within striking distance (807).

Day Three will feature the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay.

I think Dressel is trending more and more away from doing the 50m free in LCM. He’s shown great potential for 100-200m events.

More useful for relays! I’m not sure he can manage a 200 LCM as well as SCY but, who knows, 23 at the end of a 200 IM

Don’t forget he was 21.5 last summer. (Open water, zero pressure), and 21.8 at trials (super crowded choppy water, much more intense environment). I think nationals this coming summer will be the best indicator to if you’re correct or not. If he is still above 21.7, perhaps focus shifts a bit to 200m, but if he is at 21.6 or lower, forget about it.

If he swims 200 at nationals, which I think he will, I think 1:47.2-6 is in the cards. Maybe by 2020 he’ll have a 1:46 low or 1:45 mid (split) and play relay duty if necessary.

I also wonder if he’ll do 50s stroke. Maybe he’ll trend the Vlad Morozov/Flo Manadou route and be… Read more »

Florida hasn’t been able to train short course at all this year because the O’Dome is under renovations (which is also why they haven’t had any home meets). They have been in the outdoor long course pool since the beginning of the year. For Caeleb to be this fast right now is very encouraging, especially since it’s all on LC training and their walls and underwaters are not as sharp as they will be when they are able to go back to short course training in a few weeks. That 23.3 on the end of the IM was nuts.

Dressel continues to be on fire. Mark my words, he’s going 43 at NCAAs in the 100m fly!

It’s 100 yards, but yeah. It would be insane to see multiple guys under 44, with Schooling being the obvious other candidate.

Nothing extraordinary but better showing from Rooney. However his last 50 are still not good, like last summer. It’s only November and he must probably digest the training change so hopefully the finish will be there when it counts, in March for NCAAs and in June and July for US nationals and world championships.
