The men’s 50 free final tonight was very quick among the top 4. For Dressel, his winning time of 21.69 is the fastest in-season time he has gone, typically swimming over 22 seconds. - BRONZE: Giles Smith– 23.69
Caeleb Dressel has officially went 2-for-2 tonight with his win in the 50 fly. This is also his second time defeated Michael Andrew tonight, out-touching the 19-year-old phenom by 0.11s. Dressel’s time is the 12th-fastest time in the world this year. Andrew was the Des Moines winner of this event, where his winning time of 23.36 remains the 7th-fastest time in the world.
This articles keep forgetting he was 23.24 in prelims, thats 5th fastest in the world
I’m sorry to be a pain in the butt but I think that Dutch Mathys Goosen was one hundreth faster than Dressel in Marseille earlier this year…
Even so, a phenomenal swim by Caeleb.
Has Dressel been tapered?? No. Lmao
Was Goosen tapered in Marseille?? No. Lmao
…and he still beat MA.
Twice.
He clips another 1.2 sec off and he clips Govorov. It’s interesting that his fly is built for the 100 and his free is built for the 50. He’s obviously terrific at the 50 fly and 100 free, but his separation from the crowd is the other distances.
At the World Championships in 2017, he won the 100 free by .70 seconds, which is a 1.483% margin. In the 50 free, he won by .12 seconds, which is a 0.24% margin. If you normalize for distance, the margin of victory for the 100 was 7.0×10^-3 sec/meter and for the 50 it was 2.4×10^-3 sec/meter. No matter how you look at it, he won the 100 free by a significantly larger margin than the 50. I haven’t looked at NCAA championships data, but I suspect the margins would be closer and possibly tilt towards the 50, likely because short course favors starts, turns, and underwaters, which Dressel obviously excels at. So depending on how you parse the data, you… Read more »
