Saturday morning will consist of heats of men’s and women’s 400 free, men’s and women’s 100 breast, and men’s and women’s 100 back. The men’s 800 free relay will be added in finals.
100m backstroke world record-holder Regan Smith of Riptide and world champion Olivia Smoliga of Athens Bulldog Swim Club, seeded #1 and #2 respectively in the women’s 100 back on Saturday morning, have scratched out of heats. Smith broke the World Record in the 100 back leading off the 4×100 medley relay for the United States, while Smoliga won the 50 back and was third in the 100 in Gwangju last week.
Caeleb Dressel of Gator Swim Club scratched out of the men’s 100 breast where he was seeded 17th. Dressel picked up eight medals at World Championships in Gwangju, and while we know he made it to Nationals, he has yet to compete in any of the events he entered.
World University Games champion Justin Ress of Wolfpack Elite/NC State just back from Napoli where he earned gold in the 50m backstroke (tied with Zane Waddell) and bronze in the 100m back, has scratched prelims of the latter event here in Palo Alto. Ryan Lochte, however, is still swimming the 100 back after having scratched the 400 IM on Friday.

Justin Ress was not in Gwangju as mentioned in the article
Is it me or does Ress just scratch all the time? I get it at NCAAs for relay purposes…but like MA the 50 back isn’t going to get you to the dance…..
Geez, someone crawl under the stall door and rescue the poor guy.
No can do. Ryan held is guarding the door. He wants another national title in the 50x
Ryan Held. Olympic gold medalist, National Champion, and Guardian of the Stall.
Really hope hes taking a few days off to recuperate then gives the 200IM a shot
At this point I’d say he’s probably either testing the 2IM or thinks he’s got the 50 WR in him, both of which would be exciting prospects
or maybe he doesn’t want to swim but is for some reason required to make a nationals appearance
His sister is also swimming…. that could be why he’s there also
smoliga got third, she didnt win
