Just after the end of the Wednesday preliminaries session at the 2013 US National Championships and World Championship Trials, Bolles’ Caeleb Dressel tied the National Age Group Record in the 15-16 50 meter freestyle.
His 22.72 tied a 2008 swim by future Cal Bear Shayne Fleming. This might be his only chance at the record. He won’t swim the 50 free in Indy, and instead will head home to Jacksonville, Florida and swim it at a Bolles-hosted meet this weekend, where he’ll try to break the tie. As shocking as it might sound, he didn’t have the trials cut in this race.
What’s really impressive is that this was Dressel’s third swim of the morning. He was tied for 18th in the 200 free initially, then had to do a swim-off with Alex Wold (which he won in 1:50.47) before taking on this 50. That’s impressive poise for a 16-year old, though becoming a bit of a norm after he stood up and went a best time while racing 7 Olympians in the 100 free final on Tuesday.
In that 100 free, he broke the National Age Group Record twice, first in the morning with a 49.63, and then again in finals with a 49.50.
Dressel trains at Bolles under Jason Calanog.
All yall that swam did a great job!!!
I think Caeleb Dressel is the real deal.
He should go pro!

Matheus Santana has 22.79 and 50.20 as 16 year old..
Also Sedov has 22.67 and 49.82 as 16 year old
And a star is born.. Makes me think of Micheal Andrew and how far he has to go. These are more like the performances and the right age that would make a junior consider turning pro. Ryan Murphy, Conger, Dressel, jaeger, Shields( hopefully) future of USA mens swimming looking good.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Michael Andrew under 23 this year and he’s 14.
yes wouldn’t be surprised either, he’s pretty well developed for such a young guy and hope he doesn’t hit a glass ceiling, I swam with many juniors who at 14 towered above me and dominated the field only to slowly fade away as the rest caught up, in my case at 19. Either way hope to see Micheal in the running come Rio, but still feel with his age, consistency and times Caleb is a sure contender for Rio (as sure as sure can be!)
CB
Andrews ie probably already taller than most of 16 year old swimmers will ever be,, he is taller than Morozov!
I read you Braden and I see that Caeleb has swum 22.72 after two 200 free? It’s a huge performance! I’m sure that fresh, he can already go under 22.50.
With Phelps gone, Lochte on his last olympics, and others such as Grevers, Adrian, Thoman, Behrens, Hansen, McGill, Clary, and a whole host of others possibly retiring from the sport after the next Olympics, our country will be in desperate need of younger blood. This kid looks to have the talent, work ethic, and marketable look to be the next face of USA mens swimming (not to put too much pressure on the guy).
I’m not fully read up on the history of our swimmers, but I’d imagine his times are close to, or ahead of where a Lochte, or maybe a Behrens, or Adrian were at this time….that’s very promising!
Superb time.
Dressel times are a way ahead of Nathan Adrian times.Adrian was 23.43 and 50.99 at sixteen. Its another league.Lets hope he can develop with the same pace of Adrian and we will have a beast. In international level, there is some guys in(or near) the same level in Australia,Russia and Brazil.
Hopefully he’ll be at the US Open.
Hopefully he will swim at the junior world championships in August. He would be the favorite in the 50 free and in the 100 free.
Bobo. Matheus Santana already went 22.7 last year on 50 free.. and I think the australians have someone faster on 100 free.. he won´t be top seed If I am correctly
Yes, you are correct. He certainly have a chance for placing in the top 3 tho.
The JWC has an age limit of 18, but everyone swims the same race, it isn’t like an age group meet. Dressel will be up against 17 and 18 year olds, so it will not be a walkover, though he will be equal favourite in the 100.
I think that the favorite on both sprints might be Sedov.. but he is not much ahead of the rest
He did that after swimming 2 200fr this morning?
Let’s hope the flight back to Jacksonville doesn’t take too much out of him, should definitely be able to get under it.
