The 2018 GLVC Championships kicked off on Wednesday night, with defending champions Drury jumping out to leads in both the men’s and women’s standings. Drury won all 4 of the women’s events and 2 of the 4 men’s events on the 1st day of competition.
Drury‘s biggest individual performances of day 1 came in the 1000, where Erica Dahlgren and Joan Casanovas won the women’s and men’s races respectviely, both broke the GLVC record, and each achieved the NCAA Division 2 ‘A’ cut, automatically qualifying them for the D2 NCAAs. Dahlgren went a 9:55.69 to be the 1st woman in the conference to break 10 minutes. Casanovas won the men’s 1000 with a 9:04.62, coming in just under the GLVC record of 9:04.66 which was set last year. Casanovas negative split his race, taking the 1st 500 out in 4:33.13, and coming back in 4:31.49. Dahlgren’s time is 2nd in the D2 rankings this year, while Casanovas’ is #1.
Drury also broke the GLVC records in the men’s and women’s 200 medley relays, however neither of their times were season bests. The men’s team broke Indianapolis’ GLVC record of 1:28.70 with their time of 1:28.14. Pavel Semochkin led off the relay in 22.57, followed by Andrea Bazzoli (24.43), Ryan Walker (21.02), and anchored by Rodrigo Caceres (20.12). The same squad went 1:27.56 back in November.
