Jorge Breaks Two Portuguese Junior Records

Duarte Jorge, who was born in 2001, set new Portuguese junior records in both the men’s 800 and 1500 freestyle on the first night of the Portuguese Junior and Senior National Championships. Jorge took the first 800 meters of the 1500 meter event out in a time of 8:43.31 and then finished the race in a time of 16:30.45. He beat his own 800 freestyle record of 8:44.94, which he set in July and Pedro Oliveira‘s 1500 freestyle record of 16:31.97 set in 2005.

Guilherme Pina won the event in a time of 15:35.17 while Jorge finished seventh overall.

Joao Vital also set a new age group record in the men’s 400 IM posting a time of 4:22.25. The 18 year old broke his own record of 4:23.85, which he set in March. Vital won the event with ease finishing over seven seconds ahead of the field.

Jessica Fullalove of Great Britain had the top performance in the women’s events over the first two days of competition taking the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:10.76. Ana Rodrigues also had a strong performance in the women’s 50 breaststroke putting up a time of 31.79 only 19 one-hundredths of a second off the Portuguese national record.

Tamila Holub, one of only three Portuguese women swimming in Rio, won the women’s 800 freestyle in a time of 8:49.19.
