DURHAM – Duke swimming and diving head coach Dan Colella announced the team’s election of seven team captains for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

The women’s captains are seniors Lucy Callard and Maddi Pullinger and junior Olivia Tighe. Seniors David Hallaron and Cole Reznick and juniors Coleman Kredich and Will Tenpas will lead the men’s team.

“I believe this group of captains will bring exactly what we need in terms of leadership to help Duke Swimming and Diving produce amazing results this year,” Colella said. “They will do it in a manner that it is not only producing great results but making the experience unforgettable.”

Meet the Captains:

Lucy Callard enters her senior season and returns as a captain for the Blue Devils. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Callard holds top-10 times in program history in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyle events. Her 16:34.20 in the 1,650 ranks third in school lore. Last season, Callard sported three finals appearances at the Janice Hape Dowd Invitational, highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the 200 butterfly. Callard also recently competed in the 200-meter butterfly at the USA Olympic Team Trails – Wave I in Omaha, Neb. In addition to her success in the pool, Callard is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient.

Maddi Pullinger enters her senior season for the Blue Devils. The Sydney, Australia native recently concluded her junior season that culminated with CSCAA All-America honorable mention honors in one-meter diving as she placed 15th at the NCAA Championship in the event. Pullinger also earned ACC Women’s Diver of the Week honors after sweeping the one- and three-meter events against Virginia Tech in the first week of the season. She was named a CSCAA First Team Scholar All-American this season after earning honorable mention honors a season ago. In addition, Pullinger is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient.

Olivia Tighe will be the lone junior captain on the women’s side. Tighe, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, enters her junior season at Duke and represented Duke in three events at her first ACC Championship meet this past season. She currently holds the ninth-fastest time in program history in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking 1:48.49 in the event and placing fourth at the 2020 Janice Hape Dowd Invitational. Out of the water, Tighe recently completed the Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement (ACE) Program, a three-week summer service experience in which she teamed up to virtually volunteer with community-based organizations in Peru.

David Hallaron will serve as a captain for the first time in his career. In the final meet of last season, Hallaron clocked the Duke record in the 500 freestyle (4:22.33) and the second-fastest time in program lore in the 200 backstroke (1:44.19). The Grapevine, Texas native reached two finals at the ACC Championship, placing 19th and 20th in the 200 freestyle and backstroke, respectively. His 1:35.76 at ACCs in the 200 free ranks third all-time at Duke. Hallaron concluded his season with CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention honors and was awarded the team’s Above and Beyond Award at the end of year banquet. Out of the pool, he is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll recipient.

Cole Reznick has enjoyed three strong seasons in Durham and will serve as a captain for the first time. Reznick, a breaststroke and medley specialist, was stellar for Duke at the 2021 ACC Championship, reaching three individual finals and contributing in four Duke relays. At the conference meet, the Pleasanton, Calif., native recorded a school record time of 1:44.61 in the 200 individual medley while placing 10th in the event. Reznick also placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke (53.32 – seventh all-time at Duke) and helped Duke to finish ninth at ACCs in both the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay with top-five times in program history. He concluded his season being named the team’s Most Valuable Athlete and earned CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention honors.

Coleman Kredich also returns as a captain for the Duke men’s team. He enters his junior sophomore season after missing the 2020-21 season due to injury. Although he did not compete, Kredich continued to be a leader on the pool deck for the Blue Devils. As a freshman, the Knoxville, Tenn., native represented Duke in three events at the ACC Championships. In those events, the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, Kredich swam career-best times in all three at the conference meet. Kredich earned the team’s Blue Devil Award for his commitment to the team’s betterment and exemplifying the true character of a Duke student-athlete.

Will Tenpas enters his junior season for Duke. A native of Chevy Chase, Md., Tenpas represented Duke in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and individual medley as a sophomore at the ACC Championship. He recorded career best times in each event while making his conference meet debut. Tenpas joined Kredich as Blue Devil Award winners at the team’s end of year banquet. He was also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll both seasons.

Duke continues to train as it awaits the announcement of its 2021-22 schedule.
