Duncan Scott Breaks Eight Year-Old British Record In 100 Free

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

Great Britain’s Duncan Scott had a fantastic swim out of one of the earlier 100m heats, clocking a British record of 48.01 to easily qualify for the semi-finals with the 3rd fastest time.

Scott’s swim breaks an eight year-old British record previously held by Simon Burnett, who went 48.20 at the Beijing Olympics back in 2008. It also breaks his own Scottish record of 48.66, set at the British Olympic Trials back in April.

We’ve briefly talked about how rare it is for someone to qualify for the semi-finals out of the non-circle-seeded heats, but Scott just took one of the top spots from one of them. Originally seeded 28th coming into the race, Scott now finds himself in a great position to advance to the final tonight if he can put together a similar performance.

In an incredibly close morning, defending Olympic gold medallist and holder of the fastest split on Sunday’s 400 free relay Nathan Adrian almost missed the final, qualifying 16th overall in 48.58.

Scott trails the only two swimmers who got under 48 seconds this morning, Kyle Chalmers of Australia (47.90) and Caeleb Dressel (47.91), both their time under 48. Scott’s British teammate Ben Proud failed to advance out of the prelims.

Scott will also compete in the men’s 800 free relay prelims later in the session.

Scratch the 800 Relay and swim tonight after 100 semis! Just my idea – I’m not your coach. I’m not even sure if you’re allowed to scratch after lineups are in.
