Duncan Scott Breaks Scottish Record for Commonwealth Games Medals

20-year old Duncan Scott made history last weekend on the Gold Coast when he won 6 medals – the most ever won by a Scottish athlete in a single Commonwealth Games. He also won gold in the 100 free – making him the first Scotsman to ever win Commonwealth gold in that event.

Scott came up just short of a 7th medal when the country finished 4th in the 400 medley relay to end the meet; he was notably disappointed in the result after its conclusion.

He has 7 total medals when a silver on the 800 free relay from 2014 is included. That leaves him 3 shy of Scotland’s all-time, all-sport most successful Commonwealth Games athlete: shooter Alister Allan, who won 3 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals between 1974 and 1994.

With still 51 medals to be awarded on Sunday, the last day of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Scotland is already approaching its full-team medals record with 43 medals so far (9 gold, 13 silver, 21 bronze). This is the most they’ve won without the home-nation advantage, ranking behind only the Glasgow 2014 event. In the last edition, they won 19 gold, 15 silver, and 19 bronze medals, for 53 total medals – each of those 4 tallies was a new Scottish record.

Scott’s results:

  • gold – 100 free (48.02)
  • silver – 200 IM (1:57.86)
  • bronze – 200 free (1:46.30)
  • bronze – 200 fly (1:56.60)
  • bronze – 400 free relay (3:15.86)
  • bronze – 800 free relay (7:09.89)
  • 4th – 400 medley relay (3:35.15)

Pretty impressive meet for him and his Stirling team mates- Willmott, Murdoch et al.

I’m not convinced he was fully rested either, his 200Fr was a bit off. He looked like he could have swam another 1 or 2 events without much interference with his other races and his finishing speed in all events was pretty phenomenal. Maybe multi eventung here was the target over times, I speculate.

Interesting to see where his IM goes long term although fly at the level above wouldn’t be competitive.

Well done to him!
