Duquesne Picks Up Backstroker Abby Philipsen (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Abby Philipsen has announced that she will be continuing her academic and athletic career at Duquesne University. Philipsen is wrapping up her senior year at Holy Family High School, located in Broomfield, Colorado.

Philipsen shared her commitment on Instagram:

Philipsen, who swims year-round with Elevation Aquatics, specializes in backstroke events. This summer she competed at the Mount Hood Speedo Sectionals, where she earned her highest finish of the meet in the 100m backstroke at 32nd (1:08.71). She set season best times in the 50m free (29.80) and 100m free (1:04.06), and was just off in the 200m backstroke (2:32.96).

Most recently, Philipsen raced at the CSI Senior Meet in February. Her highest finish was 3rd in the 100 backstroke with a season best time of 58.45. Additionally, she competed in the 50 and 100 free, clocking season best times of 25.73 and 56.70, respectively.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 25.52
  • 100 free – 55.19
  • 50 back – 26.90
  • 100 back – 58.02
  • 200 back – 2:04.13

Duquesne is a NCAA Division I mid-major program that competes in the Atlantic-10 (A-10) conference. The Dukes are coming off a 4th-place finish at the 2023 A-10 Championships, where they finished just half a point behind George Mason and half a point ahead of Fordham. Both backstroke events were relatively strong at conference, as Duquesne tallied 35.5 points in the 100 and 41 points in the 200 back. It took a 57.19 to advance to the B-final in the 100 and a 2:02.19 in the 200, meaning Philipsen would need to drop time to get into scoring range.

Haley Scholer and Hayley Taylor led the way for the Dukes in the 100 backstroke at A-10s, as they recorded 5th (54.43) and 6th (54.64) place finishes, respectively. In the 200 backstroke, Scholer and Taylor earned 3rd (1:56.34) and 5th (1:57.61), and were joined in the A-final by Reagan Linkous who took 8th (1:59.89). All three will still be on campus when Philipsen arrives, giving her the opportunity to train with a talented backstroke group.

Philipsen is the only public commitment for Duquesne’s class of 2027. Caitlin Horning has announced her commitment for the class of 2028, and also swims backstroke with best times of 56.66/2:01.21 in the 100/200 back.
