Duquesne Wins Senior Day Matchup With Saint Francis

PITTSBURGH — The Duquesne University swimming and diving team won all 14 events and rolled to a 204-57 Senior Day victory over Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon at Towers Pool. Lexi Sundgren (200-yard freestyle) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kayla Johnson, Sundgren, Gaby Jenkins, and Natalia Fryckowska headlined the day setting new pool records.

Sundgren, a freshman out of Pittsburgh, set the new 200 freestyle record at Towers Pool with a 1:50.73, splitting 25.91 / 27.81 / 28.07 / 28.94. Julia Sobun (1:53.71) and Jenkins (1:54.07) finished right behind in second and third.

Duquesne also claimed the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Johnson (23.93) won the 50-yard and Sobun (52.52) paced the 100-yard. Fryckowska (23.98) and Molly Brennan (24.92) rounded out the top three in the 50-yard event, while Jenkins (52.56) and Fryckowska (53.45) took second and third in the 100-yard. In the 500-yard freestyle, Aislinn Mooney took gold turning in a 5:13.38 and Sydney Severini was the runner up at 5:16.97.

The record-setting 400-yard freestyle relay squad posted a 3:29.83, edging out the previous pool record by less than a second. The DU quartet of Orla EganKatie Simpson, Sobun, and Molly Brennan followed closed behind in second with a 3:35.38.

Haley Scholer won both her individual events with a 4:28.90 in the 400-yard IM and a 2:08.60 in the 200-yard IM, while also being a member of the 200-yard medley relay winning team. Severini, Sobun, and Johnson joined Scholer on the relay-winning squad to begin the meet just beating out teammates Reagan LinkousMadison DickertAbby Mele, and Fryckowska by 0.06 seconds.

Mele took first in both breaststroke events (100 and 200 yard), while Dickert closely followed in second each time.

Katie Simpson (100-yard backstroke), Madeline Marks (200-yard butterfly), and Claudia Rzeznik (100-yard butterfly) rounded out the 14 event winners.

“Eddie and I were extremely pleased with the results of today’s meet,” said head coach David Sheets. “The celebration of our seniors in a packed house in conjunction with some great swimming was a formula for a lot of excitement. They rallied around each other on every race and showed great support.  I’m proud of each and every one of our swimmers and divers.”

The Dukes honored 10 final-year athletes prior to the meet for their contributions to the program; Molly BrennanMadison DickertNatalia FryckowskaRegan HolsteinGaby JenkinsReagan LinkousMadeline MarksAbby MelePayton Rayko, and Alyssa Schonbachler – along with graduating team manager Julia Davis.

Duquesne will remain in the Steel City next weekend for the Western PA Invite hosted at Carnegie Mellon on Jan. 26 and 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Duquesne kept Saint Francis out of the top spot all day, but the Red Flash did manage to crack second place in some events.

Bridget Kurtzweil (Avon, Ohio) earned the first second-place finish for Saint Francis, clocking in at 59.19 in the 100-yard backstroke.

Inde Patterson (Moon Township, Pa.) placed second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.80.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Nicole Lopez Kohlmann (Mexico City, Mexico) picked up a second-place finish with a time of 2:11.44.

UP NEXT

The Red Flash will return home to host Lock Haven tomorrow at 1 p.m. for their final home meet of the season. A senior recognition ceremony will be held before the meet.
