Eason Jones of Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club has announced her verbal commitment to the application process* at Yale University for the 2022-23 school year. She’ll follow older siblings Raime Jones (junior) and Jed Jones (freshman) as a Yale swimmer.

Jones swam with Metroplex Aquatics in Texas until 2020, when she moved to Connecticut and has since been training with Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club. At the Texas HS 5A Championships last February, she finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:06.79) and ninth in the 500 free (5:06.50).
At the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – West, Jones had a high finish in the 400 IM, taking 29th with a lifetime best 4:23.89.
Last season, Jones would’ve been #4 on Yale’s roster in the 200 back and 400 IM. She would’ve made B-finals in both events at the 2020 Ivy League Championships, where Yale finished third as a team.
Jones will join Caroline McCurdy and Sydney Kang in the Bulldogs’ class of 2026.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.

is that true? Are they turning down or not considering qualified recruits because of financial need? Is this common in the Ivies? Maybe SwimSwam should look into, Mr. Ortegon?
Yale has a needs blind admissions policy, so ability to pay is not considered. However athletic performance is considered to fill out the teams.

Swimswam won’t touch the shady recruiting of any team. They have awesome access right now. They start poking around too much they might get shut off.
This is not true at all. If teams are breaking recruiting rules, spoken or unspoken, we’re certainly interested in covering that.
The problem is that this sort of thing usually ranges from “inside baseball” (petty intrapersonal stuff that nobody outside of the 4 people involved cares about) to “unverifiable” (nobody wants to talk about it on the record, nobody wants to provide documentation). That makes it by-and-large unreportable.
i agree that investigating the recruiting practices in the Ivy League (or any other conference) would not be an easy assignment, but unreportable??? come on.

I was recruited by an Ivy League school. I wound up not going to the Ivy League, but I didn’t notice anything about their recruiting that was any different than anywhere else.
The insinuations here are terrible. Having been through lots of Ivy recruiting with swimmers I can assure you that I have never seen anything remotely as nefarious as what is being suggested. Most athletes on the teams have some sort of financial aid (which is strictly need based on a pre-determined graduated scale applicable to every student admitted) and the athletic department is not involved in that process. A students ability to pay or not pay for school should not detract from their accomplishments and exciting decision. Shame on those suggesting otherwise with no basis.
