Eastern Michigan Defends Home Turf To Win 2014 EMU Invitational

Eastern Michigan was able to defend their pool to win the 2014 Eastern Michigan Invitational on both the men’s and women’s side. The two day invite is set up opposite of most conference schedules, starting with the last day during the first session and ending with the traditional “first day.” Each session features timed finals. The meet started with one session on friday evening, the second session Saturday morning, and the final session finishing up Saturday evening.

Bowling Green sophomore Estela Davis Ortiz broke the meet record in the women’s 200 backstroke with her time of 1:57.80. She had a strong meet all around. Later she won the 400 IM in 4:20.11, only to follow with that with a new meet record in the 100 backstroke at 54.97. That swim, however, was an exhibition swim and did not count for team points. In her final individual swim of the meet, she finished second in the 200 IM at 2:05.12.

Oakland University sophomore Aleksander Danielewski followed the women’s 200 backstroke with an impressive 1:45.17. He finished five seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. He continued to win the men’s 100 backstroke in 48.30 and the 200 IM in 1:50.40.

Other pool and meet records included Bowling Green’s women’s 400 medley relay (3:43.56), 200 medley relay (1:43.12), Eastern Michigan men’s 400 freestyle relay (3:00.11), and Oakland women’s 200 freestyle relay (1:33.75).
