Ella Nelson, Nyls Korstanje Among 53 Honored By ACC With Postgraduate Scholarships

The ACC has selected 53 student-athletes to receive postgraduate scholarship awards, including six swimmers and one diver.

The athletes will receive the Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford and Jim and Pat Thacker Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, which are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements.

Among the recipients are University of Virginia star Ella Nelson, who recently committed to swimming a fifth year with the Cavaliers, and NC State male sprinter Nyls Korstanje.

Nelson, a Kinesiology major, played an integral part to UVA’s third straight women’s national title this past season, placing second in the 400 IM, third in the 200 breast and fourth in the 200 IM at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

Korstanje, who majors in Sustainable Materials and Technology, was a critical player on the Wolfpack relays this past season and also earned big points individually by placing seventh in the 100 fly and ninth in the 50 free at the Men’s NCAA Championships.

Korstanje has yet to indicate whether or not he’ll exercise his fifth year of eligibility at NC State.

Other swimming & diving honorees include UNC diver Anton Down-Jenkins, and swimmers Nick Mason (FSU), McKenzie Campbell (Georgia Tech), Sarah Shackelford (Virginia Tech) and Cason Wilburn (Notre Dame).

Wilburn, who studies Environmental Engineering, was one of three student-athletes who received the Thacker Award.

“The student-athletes in the ACC are amazing, and we are especially proud to honor this year’s class of ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients that represent our 15 world-class institutions,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D.

“The academic and athletic resumes of these 53 student-athletes are incredible, and we applaud their dedication and commitment to excellence. We look forward to continuing to support these tremendous individuals as they approach the future, which is incredibly bright for each of them.”
