Emma McKeon Rocks 50.77 Meet Record En Route To 100 Freestyle Gold

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The first final of tonight’s session in Melbourne brought the fireworks as host nation swimmer Emma McKeon rocked a new Championships Record en route to winning the women’s 100m freestyle.

Stopping the clock in a super speedy time of 50.77, McKeon beat out defending champion Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong who settled for silver in 50.87. Dutch ace Marrit Steenbergen rounded out the top 3 in the race with a bronze medal-worthy mark of 51.25.

Haughey set the previous championships standard at the 50.98 she put up in Abu Dhabi, with both McKeon and Haughey beating that benchmark in tonight’s duel.

McKeon opened her monster performance in 24.41 and closed in 26.36. Compare that to Haughey’s 2021 mark where she opened in 24.52 and closed in 26.46, with McKeon shaving off time on both halves of the race.

New Meet Record Former Meet Record
50m 24.41 24.52
100m 26.36 26.46
Final Time 50.77 50.98

As quick as McKeon was, her own personal best in this SCM 100 free stays intact, with the most decorated Australian Olympian of all-time having produced a time of 50.58 in October of 2021. However, her result here is the 5th fastest performance of all time.

McKeon now owns 3 of the 5 fastest all-time performances in this event.
