The 2016 YMCA Long Course National Championships kicked off the summer American championships season on Wednesday, in preparation for upcoming Futures, Junior National, and U.S. Open Championships over the next 2 weeks.
The first day saw limited action, with a finals-only session of the 200 free relays and 1500 freestyles for both boys and girls.
The individual races saw both champions repeat from the 2015 edition of this meet. First up on the women’s side was 17-year old, Hickory, North Carolina swimmer Emmaline Peterson, who swam 16:45.63 to win by nearly 20 seconds. The margin was much bigger than last year’s ahead of Boise’s Abbey Erwin, who was 2nd in 17:05.24 also for the second-straight season, thanks in part to a five-second improvement from Peterson.
On the boys’ side of the pool, Cheshire, Connecticut swimmer Karl Bishop faced a much stiffer challenge for his second-straight, and presumably last, YMCA National title before he begins his college career at UConn this fall. He took a win in 15:35.36, which besides being a lifetime best by 12 seconds, included a very fast 29.13 split over the last 50 meters to come-from-behind on 15-year old runner-up Ross Dant (15:36.77). Dant was 6 seconds ahead of his next-closest competitor, and he now will be the favorite to win the 2017 title in this event.
in the relays, the girls 200 was won by the Fanwood Scotch Plains YMCA in 1:46.29, thanks to four 26-second splits (the only team to do so). Cheshire was 2nd in 1:46.94, and Red Bank was 3rd in 1:47.51 to give the state of New Jersey two of the top three finishers.
Also of note were three 25 second splits from teams further down the results, including a 25.66 from Megan Sichterman of the Countryside YMCA as part of that team’s 6th-place finish.
Men’s 200 free relay results were not available as of time of posting.

FYI – Chesire is in CT – Not Jersey.
Coach – Red Bank and Fanwood Scotch Plains are both in New Jersey, hence making it 2 of 3.
I’m an idiot. I read it wrong.
