Emory Falls in Dual Meets to D-I UNC Wilmington

Emory University swimmers and divers recorded a combined 11 first place finishes and a pair of NCAA Division III ‘B’ cut times on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately both the men and women dropped their intercollegiate season-opening dual meet at the Division I University of North Carolina – Wilmington.

The Emory women were edged out by the higher-division opponent, falling 152-146 to the Seahawks.  On the men’s side, the Eagles suffered a 193-95 defeat.  Both Emory squads dropped to 0-1 on the year with the losses, while the UNC Wilmington men improved to 2-1, and the women to 2-2.

Both of the Eagles’ ‘B’ cut times came in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke, where sophomore Elizabeth Aronoff finished third in a provisional qualifying time of 2:24.25, while senior Kylie McKenzie was close behind with a fourth-place time of 2:24.26.

Junior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg added three individual first-place finishes, winning each of the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:33.62), 200-yard butterfly (2:09.75) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.47).  Other first-place finishers in swimming events for the Emory women were freshman Marissa Bergh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.55), junior Nancy Larson in the 100-yard freestyle (53.01 seconds) and junior Michelle York in the 400-yard individual medley (4:39.40).  Sophomore diver Kellen Hope swept both diving events, winning the one-meter dive with a score of 245.40 and the three-meter dive with a career-best score of 263.40.

Emory’s men came away with three first-place finishes, with a pair coming from sophomore Andrew Wilson.  Wilson swept both breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.79 seconds, and the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:08.76.  Junior Hayden Baker added a winning effort in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.64.

The Eagles will return home for their first dual meet of the season at the Woodruff Physical Education Center, as Emory will host Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday, October 26th at 1:00 PM.
