The Emory University Swimming and Diving Team opened their 2013-14 campaign on Friday afternoon with the annual Blue-Gold Intrasquad meet at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
With the squad split into two teams – Blue and Gold – the Blue team was triumphant in both the men’s and women’s fields. On the men’s side, the blue swimmers claimed a 146-97 victory, while the blue women earned a 159-97 win over the gold squad.
Five different Emory men won a pair of individual events each, including freshman Mitchell Cooper swimming for the gold team (1000 free and 500 free), senior Jake Stephens swimming for the blue team (100 free and 200 free), senior Ross Spock swimming for the blue team (50 free and 100 back), sophomore Andrew Wilson swimming for the gold team (100 breast and 200 breast) and junior Hayden Baker swimming for the blue team (100 fly and 200 fly). Sophomores Jared Scheuer and Matt Wu, both swimming for blue, added event wins with victories in the 200 back and 200 IM, respectively.
For the women, junior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg led the way for the gold team with wins in each of the 1000 free, 200 fly and 500 free. Four other Eagles – freshman Marissa Bergh for blue (200 free, 50 free), sophomore Ellie Thompson for blue (100 back, 200 back), freshman Annelise Kowalsky for gold (100 breast and 200 IM) and senior Sarah Greene for blue (1-meter dive and 3-meter dive) – each won two events, while junior Nancy Larson (100 free), senior Kylie McKenzie (200 breast) and junior Nina Zook (100 fly), each swimming for blue, won events as well.
Emory will be back in action on Saturday, October 19th at 11:00 AM, competing in its first intercollegiate meet of the season at NCAA Division I program UNC Wilmington.
