KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry College Men’s Swimming Team got the 2021-22 season underway over the weekend at the King University Early Season Invitational. The Wasps saw records fall in 11 of the 17 events in which they competed as they finished seventh out of 10 competing teams.

The Records
– In the first event of the weekend, E&H broke the team record in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the efforts of freshmen Corey Kidd (Stockbridge, Ga.), Aiden Quertermous (Awendaw, S.C.), Matthew Gocke (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), and Kyle Berry (Ringgold, Ga.) with a time of 1:29.81. Kidd’s leadoff swim of :22.11 also broke the school record for the 50-yard freestyle.
– Kidd grabbed two more records in the 100-yard freestyle (:48.68) and the 100-yard backstroke (:53.82).
– Gocke broke into the individual records, breaking the 5:00 barrier in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.09. He also claimed a record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:22.57) and set the record in the 1,000-yard freestyle as a split in 10:31.93.
– The 200- and 400-yard medley relays both came within a second of breaking school records.
– Berry grabbed the record in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking a :53.26 while Berry clocked a :53.26 in the 100-yard butterfly.
– Quertermous set a new team record in the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.28) and freshman Payton Nabors (Lawrenceville, Ga.) broke the team record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.89.
– The 400-yard freestyle relay of Quertermous, junior Ryan Spangler (Daleville, Va.), Berry and Kidd closed out the meet with a new record, stopping the watches in 3:19.53.

– Emory & Henry will open the home portion of its season next Saturday when it hosts Randolph College and Warren Wilson College at 1:00 p.m.
