To finish off their utterly dominant NCAA D3 Championships performance this week, the Emory women won the 400 free relay in a new D3 record. The quartet of Fiona Muir, Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe, Caroline Olson and Marissa Bergh combined for a final time of 3:19.56, taking nearly two full seconds out of the old record. Emory held the record previously, but with a different foursome– Renee Rosenkranz, Nancy Larson, Ann Wolber and Anna Dobben from the 2013 NCAA Championships.
Muir, the 100 free champion, got things started with a 49.93 lead-off leg to push Emory to a sizable lead, and Sanchez-Aizcorbe and Olson went back-to-back 49’s to give Bergh a near four second cushion. Bergh anchored in 50-flat, sealing the deal for the Eagles. They were well under the old record of 3:21.28.
Split Comparison
EMORY (2013, OLD RECORD) | EMORY, 2017 (NEW RECORD)
Rosenkranz 50.54 | Muir 49.93
Larson 49.68 | Sanchez-Aizcorbe 49.91
Wolber 51.38 | Olson 49.72
Dobben 49.68 | Bergh 50.00
Total: | 3:21.28 | 3:19.56 |
Larson and Dobben were hammer legs for the 2013 team, but an overall impressive effort across the board for the 2017 team made a huge difference. Their 3:19.56 put them well ahead of 2nd place Williams (3:23.11) and 3rd place Kenyon (3:23.37). With that swim, the Emory Eagles officially won the NCAA title with 645.5 points, 200.5 points ahead of 2nd place Williams (445).
