Eastern Michigan and Northwestern men’s teams both began their regular seasons with a dual meet at EMU.  The Eagles and Wildcats traded the lead throughout the meet, with EMU making a push in the final events to claim victory.

NU freshmen Dong Jin Hwang and Liam Gately had a strong showing at their first meet as Wildcats. Gately won both the 200 free (1:41.10) and 500 free (4:36.75). Hwang took the 1000 free by over 10 seconds, posting a 9:29.17, and finished 2nd behind Gately in the 500 (4:38.62). Wildcat Junior Will Hofstadter took both the 100 and 200 breast, going 56.58 and 2:04.88.

EMU’s Tosh Kawaguchi (Jr.) won 3 events decisively. He took the 100 and 200 back (49.37/1:47.93), and the 200 IM (1:51.24). Logan Burton (Sr.) took both the 100 and 200 fly (48.99/1:50.03), and Jake Tyson (Jr.) won the 100 free with a 46.29.

Northwestern won both the 200 medley and 200 free relays. The medley relay, made up of Jack Thorne (24.01), Will Hofstadter (25.16), Arjun Sharma (22.26), and Almog Olshtein (20.56) finished in 1:31.99. Keegan Bundy (21.57), Alex Snarski (21.12), Will Hofstadter (20.76), and Almog Olshtein (20.90) combined to win the 200 free relay with a 1:24.35.

Other event winners:

  • Alex Snarski, 50 free (21.35)
  • Pierre Al’x, 1 meter diving
  • Peter Rusenas, 3 meter diving

EMU Head Coach, Peter Linn said “This meet has always been a great rivalry for us and we have had some exciting dual meets through the years,” and added that “It’s always fun to beat a Power 5 team. I was especially happy with the way the team responded being down early and racing themselves back into the picture and then have enough points for victory before the final event.”

EMU is back in action on Saturday, October 14th at Kentucky. Northwestern is back in the pool October 20th, when they host Georgia.
