English Butterflier Sara Kalawska Commits to ECU

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sara Kalawska, an English swimmer from the St. John Newman Catholic School, has committed to East Carolina University for the fall of 2022.

I chose ECU because of how beautiful the surrounding area is, and how welcoming both the swimmers and the coaches are! I cannot wait to start there in August 2022!! Go Pirates!”

Kalawska also swims for Hatfield Swim Club. She was part of England’s National Junior squad in the 100m butterfly. At the 2019 British Summer Championships, she finished 2nd in the women’s 16-years 100m butterfly, 8th in the women’s 16-years 200m butterfly, and 10th in the women’s 16-years 50m butterfly.

Her SCM 100 and 200 fly times, when converted to SCY, would give her USA Swimming Futures cuts, and she would almost qualify for Junior National times.

Best short-course meters times (converted):

  • 100 fly: 1:00.54 (54.49 SCY)(1:01.57 LCM)
  • 200 fly: 2:13.97 (2:00.58 SCY)(2:18.29 LCM)

ECU is a member of the American Athletic Conference. This season, the women’s team was reinstated after being cut due to budget restraints. The last time ECU participated in conference championships was in 2020, where the women placed 4th out of 6 teams.

With her converted times, Kalawska would’ve placed 2nd in the 100 butterfly at the 2021 women’s AAC Championships, and 4th in the 200 fly. If Kalawska can match the converted times, she’ll be the 3rd-fastest 100 butterflier in program history, and the 7th-fastest 200 butterflier.

While ECU took a hit from a number of transfers after the original cutting of the program, this is a highlight addition to their class of 2022 that shows that they are able to rebuild the program.

Kalawska will join a program with at least 13 other swimmers.

“Sara was a lot of fun to recruit,” said head coach Matthew Jabs in a news release. “She is a very good flyer and will be a great building block for the future of the program in those events. We are very excited to have Sara with us and look forward to her development into one of the top flyers in the American Athletic Conference.”

Kalawska is arriving at a crucial moment, as all of ECU’s current butterflier are seniors or graduate students. The other butterflier joining in 2022, Emily Campbell, has a 200 fly time of 2:03.04.

Let’s hope the AD who was threatened with a Title IX lawsuit to force him to reinstate the women’s team doesn’t change his mind. He doesn’t have the guts to meet with men’s swimming alumni who have offered to subsidize the men hence reinstating them. Swimmers and divers beware ADs who dislike our sport..
