Some of the top swimmers from Maryland summer club teams in the MCSL competed in a long course meet last week. Prior names to swim in the same league are 2020 Tokyo Olympian Pheobe Bacon and 2016 Rio Olympian Jack Conger.
Highlighting the meet was 17 year old Erin Gemmell of Potomac Woods. Gemmell won the 200 freestyle in a 1:57.45, which was just off her best time of 1:57.41 which she swam in April 2022. Notably, her time here was also faster than she was at 2022 US International Team Trials where she swam a 1:58.12 to finish seventh. Her time here would have finished fourth. Her time also set a 15-18 meet record as the previous record stood at a 2:03.19 set by Elizabeth Pepper in 2019.
Gemmell did not stop her success at the 200 freestyle. Gemmell also swam the 100 butterfly swimming a time of 1:00.84 which was just off of her best time of 1:00.82 which she swam in April 2022. Gemmell is entered on the psych sheets in both the 200 free and 100 fly at US Nationals in Irvine this upcoming week. She is committed to Texas for fall 2023.
Also highlighting the meet was Sophie Duncan. The 18 year old who swims for Bannockburn swam a 2:16.11 in the women’s 200 IM breaking her own 15-18 meet record of 2:16.63 which she set a year ago. Her time also was a personal best as her previous best stood at a 2:16.54. She also won the women’s 200 backstroke in a 2:15.92 which was faster than her previous personal best of 2:16.79. Duncan is committed to Stanford for fall 2022.
Princeton commit (2023) Eleanor Sun (17 years old) of Wildwood Manor finished just behind Duncan in the 200 back as she swam a 2:17.38. That was faster than her best time of 2:18.75. Sun also picked up a win as she swam a 2:34.71 in the 200 breaststroke, just off of her best time of 2:34.63.
Highlighting the men’s side of the meet was James Garner. The 17 from Clarksburg Village won the 15-18 200 breast in a meet record time of 2:18.92. He won the event by over six seconds. Garner’s time broke the previous record of 2:20.50 set by Ryan Hurley in 2003.
Also highlighting the men’s side was 15 year old Adriano Arioti of Rockville. Arioti won the men’s 200 IM in a meet record time of 2:07.34 breaking the previous record of 2:07.65 set by Sam Tarter in 2017. Arioti was just off his best time of 2:07.24. Arioti also picked up another win on the day winning the men’s 100 fly in a 56.62 which was faster than his best time of 56.86.
Finishing right behind Arioti in the 100 fly was 18 year old David Yune of Stonebridge. Yune swam a 56.74, faster than his best time of 57.38. Yune also picked up his own win on the day as he won the men’s 200 free in a 1:54.53 which was a huge personal best as his previous best time stood at a 1:56.05.

Title would be more clear if it said “Summer League” meet. That’s what this is (though an extremely unique one at that).
