17 year old Erin Gemmell bested her personal best time in the LCM 200 freestyle once again swimming a 1:56.14 in finals at US Nationals in Irvine. That swim makes Gemmell the #9 American in the event of all-time, moving up from #20 from her swim this morning.
All-Time Top US Performers
- Allison Schmitt, 1:53.61
- Katie Ledecky, 1:53.73
- Missy Franklin, 1:54.81
- Dana Vollmer, 1:55.29
- Katie Hoff, 1:55.78
- Leah Smith, 1:55.98
- Ariana Kukors, 1:56.05
- Simone Manuel, 1:56.07
- Erin Gemmell, 1:56.14
Gemmell came into the meet with a best time of 1:57.41 which she swam at the beginning of April 2022 at Sectionals in Indianapolis. Notably, Gemmell was just off that best last weekend as she swam a 1:57.45 at a local summer league meet.
Gemmell’s Year by Year Progression:
2018 | 2:00.74 |
2019 | 1:59.85 |
2020 | 2:00.63 |
2021 | 1:58.61 |
2022 | 1:56.14 |
In April, Gemmell just missed making the 2022 US Worlds Team at US International Team Trials. There Gemmell swam a 1:58.12 to finish seventh. Notably, her time here tonight would have finished second, 0.99 seconds behind Katie Ledecky who won in a 1:55.14. Tonight, Ledecky won the event swimming a 1:54.50.
Notably, Gemmell’s time tonight would have earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships. The US did not have any swimmers in the final in the event.
Gemmell is entered in the 100 fly, 400 free, and 200 IM later in the meet. She is committed to Texas for fall 2023.
Three results in the list shown in the article are from 2008-2009 suit era. It’s kind of surprising that 1:56.14 has #6 ranking.
I wish upcoming SCY college season doesn’t kill this Erin’s LCM momentum.
Having three superstars (Schmitt, Ledecky and Franklin) who covered this event for more than 10 years made it probably not very popular among American swimmers. I don’t see other explanation why the strength of the field in this event was far behind the current world standards in recent years.
With the competition in this event among American swimmers getting significantly younger and moving finally to the next level there is a real possibility for American 800 relay to get back the world record… Read more »
Even though Leah Smith’s best ranks her 6th, she basically came on as Allison Schmidt prime of her career was winding down, so may be there’s some truth that Katie and Leah would be pretty much primary competitors in this race….but, i disagree that it’s discouraged others from even trying??
Erin Gemmell and the ladies over at Sandpipers are making tremendous strides in this event. Sims splitting 1:54.60, Clair Weinstein 1:56.7 leadoff (at i think 15), and we know Katie Grimes could do pretty much somewhere in between…I think it’s going to be pretty crazy likely that the 800 free relay in Paris is going to be Katie Ledecky and some combination of 16-18 olds (Bella Sims, Erin Gemmell,… Read more »
Gemmell time was faster than Schmitt leadoff from last years relay. sims, Weinstein, ledecky and Gemmell gonna be FAST (7:41.45 at world championships was unexpected with a mid 1:56 and high 1:56)
Erin Gemmell’s flat start time was faster than Leah Smith’s relay split (1:56.47) in the final of the women’s 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay at the 2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships.
Congratulations Erin!
Josie Gunn’s time is an error. She didn’t log that time.
