Brazil’s Etiene Medeiros will not compete in any of her remaining events on the Mare Nostrum tour this week due to her asthma, according to a tweet today by Brazilian reporter Alex Pussieldi. Medeiros had yet to race an event on the tour, too.
Medeiros was entered in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 back, 100 back, and 100 fly at the Canet stop of the tour, but didn’t swim any of those yesterday or today. She was seeded as highly as 2nd in the 50 free, 50 back and 100 back.
At the Barcelona stop of the Mare Nostrum tour, which runs from June 11th to the 12th and is the final stop, Medeiros had a similar schedule to the Canet meet: 50 and 100 back, 50 and 100 free. She was the 50 back top seed.
Medeiros is part of a Brazilian Olympic team that will try to impress at their home Games in Rio this summer. She’s ranked 13th in the 50 free thus far in the year, as well as 23rd in the 100 back. Medeiros is also the Brazilian record holder in the 50 free, 50 back and 100 back, and is the fastest South American woman in history in those three events.
