Day 2 of the 2019 José Finkel Trophy in Brazil brought the heat, as both men’s and women’s fields contested the 50m freestyle event.
28-year-old sprinting ace Etiene Medeiros topped the women’s edition of the splash n’ dash, clocking a gold medal-worthy effort of 24.97. Her time represented the only result under the 25-second mark, with Alessandra Marchioro and Yasmin Preusse rounding out the top 3 with respective times of 25.15 and 25.67.
For Medeiros, the SESI-SP swimmer took silver in the 50m back just weeks ago in Gwangju, Korea at this year’s FINA World Aquatic Championships. But in the 50m free there, Medeiros mustered just a 25.26 to rank 23rd out of the heats, well off her season-best of 24.53 logged in April.
She rebounded with a gold medal, however, at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in this 50m free event, producing a podium-topping mark of 24.88. Medeiros owns the Brazilian National Record in a mark of 24.45 notched at the 2016 Olympic Games.
As for the men’s 50m free tonight in Brazil, it was Marco Antonio Ferreira who got to the wall first, beating the field in a time of 22.31. Finishing just a fingernail behind was Felipe Ribeiro Souza and his result of 22.35, while Felipe Messias took bronze in 22.75.
Julia Sebastian dipped under the 2:30 threshold in the women’s 200m breast to take the victory, touching the wall in a time of 2:27.07. The men’s race saw Andreas Mickosz as the quickest, producing a winning mark of 2:12.21. Less than a half-second behind him was Raphael Rodrigues who touched in 2:12.68.

- Viviane Jungblut took the women’s 800m free meet title in a time of 8:42.85. She is the reigning Pan American bronze medalist in the event, having landed on the podium in 3rd with a time of 8:36.04 in Lima, Peru.
- The men’s 1500m free winner this evening was Guilherme Costa, who logged a mark of 15:14.88 to beat out the field. He, too, was in Lima, where he won gold in this event, producing a time there of 15:09.93.
- Minas Tenis took the mixed medley relay in a mark of 3:50.06.
