The start lists are out for the 2013 European Short Course Championships in Herning, Denmark, which will run from December 12th-15th in the northern-European city.

There are a number of interesting entries in this year’s meet. Vlad Morozov, who showed off his versatility and class in the FINA World Cup, is entered in just three individual races in Herning: the 50 free, the 100 free, and the 100 IM (though one would presume that he’ll be in at least three relays as well).
In the 50, he’ll run into France’s Florent Manaudou, who somehow managed to make even Morozov’s impressive 100 free times look slow by comparison at French Nationals on Friday. That and the 100 IM will be their only matchups however, as barring any last-minute changes, France has Mehdy Metella, Fabien Gilot, and Clement Mignon entered in the 100 free at this meet, and not Manaudou.
Editor’s note: The European Championships allows countries to enter more than two swimmers in each individual event, but only two can advance to the semi-finals/finals.
Manaudou will swim all four 50 meter races, plus the 100 IM.
Manaudou’s teammate Jeremy Stravius is entered in the 50 and 100 back, plus the 50 and 100 fly, so seemingly he’s put his IM hopes on ice for the time being.
Spain’s Mireia Belmonte-Garcia is in 5 individual races. She’ll swim the 400 and 800 freestyles, the 200 and 400 IM, and the 200 fly: her usual short course routine. Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu apparently sees no reason to pull back on her schedule at all even for a big championship meet like this. She’s entered in 7 races: the 50 and 200 back, the 100 fly and 200 fly, and the 100, 200, and 400 IM’s. Hosszu should be in good spirits, as she’s just signed a new sponsorship agreement with luxury automaker Audi.
And for those European fans who haven’t been watching, look out for Finland’s Tanja Kylliainen who is entered in the 200 IM, the 400 IM, and the 200 fly: she’s been lethal in short course this fall in the United States.
A more complete preview will follow in the days leading up to the meet.
This will be an important meet for Ruta. As Ruta Meilutyte has already won at the World Championships level in both pools and in the Olympics, she may have won basically everything after the 2014 l/c European Championships in Berlin next summer; at the age of 17 which is impressive indeed.
I think there are not too many of European women swimmers who have managed to claim victories in every championships (s/c and l/c at the European and World level) on top of the Olympics. Not even Pellegrini or Laure Manaudou have done it. A couple of Dutch freestylers seem to have been able to claim individual victories in every one of them, Inge de Bruijn and Ranomi Kromowidjojo.… Read more »
Oh, I checked too quickly. Ranomi has never won an individual gold at the European long-course Championships but she has every possibility to do so in Berlin next summer as well.
