Fa’Amausili Beats Atherton; Takes Back Junior World Record in 50m Back

After Australia’s Minna Atherton broke the junior world record and meet championship record in both the heats (28.00) and semi-finals (27.92), it was former record holder Gabrielle Fa’Amausili of New Zealand who retained her title from 2013, winning in a record time of 27.81. Atheron was also under her old record in 27.83. Danielle Hanus of Canada rounded out the top-3 with a bronze medal winning time of 28.26

Fa’Amausili previously held the junior world and championship records from the 2013 championships in Dubai, set in the prelims in 28.14. She went onto win the title in 28.64.

Atherton was looking to win the 50-100-200 back triple after smashing the junior world record in the 100 back (59.58) and the championship record in the 200 (2:09.11). Fa’Amausili finished 7th in the 100m final (1:00.74).
